Pole Barn Design & Construction

Increasing demand for Pole Barns, Shouses, and Barndominiums in MN.

In the state of Minnesota, Pole barns and Barndominiums are growing in overall popularity and functional use.  The pole barn has long been a staple of rural Minnesota for agricultural uses, but suburban, commercial, and residential pole barns for storage, living space, and business or even municipal use are on the rise.  The barndominium or pole barn home is becoming the dominant choice for Minnesotans looking for a custom new build. To see more information on why "Barndos" are growing so much in popularity, check out this resource on the benefits of post frame construction.

Flexible builder options

With the utilization of post-frame building methods increasing across the construction industry, landowners have plenty of options to consider when choosing a builder.

Option 1: Do it yourself.  If you're willing to tackle the research, design, zoning, permitting, hauling, site preparation and entire construction process all by yourself (and at least one other as the minimum size pole barn installation team is 2) that is great, but for most people it is more efficient to bring on a professional pole barn builder.

Option 2: Labor Only.  Under this option the landowner again goes through the process of applying for a permit on their own and selects and buys their own pole barn kit.  They then hire out the installation of the kit providing the builder plans to the contractor.

Option 3: Material Only.  This is the reverse of option 2 and can only be done by contractors who are also dealers of post frame construction material.  In this option, the contractor will provide the engineering and building plans necessary for the building permit and the laborers to correctly install the pole barn.  For more information on high quality post frame material, click here.

Option 4: Shell Provision and Installation.  This is one of the most common pole barn builder options.  A general contractor assists with all of the prep and permitting work, provides the material and fully completes the framing of the lumber and installation of steel siding and roofing, as well as any other components or special features selected by the customer.  Some builders will also do some finishing touches or insulation work, but may not truly complete any of the interior of your building.

Option 5: Full service general contractor.  This option is best if you want professional finishing and a streamlined workflow throughout your entire pole barn or barndominium construction process.  With a full service general contractor, you simply need to provide your selections for interior cabinets, millwork, fixtures, appliances, etc. and they will handle your new build until it is move-in ready, coordinating site-prep, shell delivery and installation, and necessary electrical/mechanical rough-ins and finishing touches.
